Regenerative Potential of Mesenchymal Stem Cells for the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis and Chondral Defects: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
This study discusses the effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on cartilage regeneration and patient-reported pain and function. Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common causes of joint pain and disability; MSCs have been extensively studied as an option for symptomatic management of knee osteoarthritis given their potential for tissue healing and regeneration. Data from 25 studies were included in the study. MSC showed significant improvements in self-reported physical function, but not self-reported pain. MSCs also provided functional benefit for patients undergoing concomitant surgery. However, the authors conclude significant variability in literature and advise results must be taken with caution.
